Biography

Svetlana Alexander, working under the name SvetArt, is a British-Russian artist based in the Algarve, Portugal. Working primarily in oils and acrylics, she explores light, expressive colour and richly layered surfaces through a personal approach she calls Luminous Colour Impasto Movement.

Her subjects range from coastal landscapes and sailing boats to musicians, portraits and everyday moments. Across these themes, she is drawn to atmosphere and emotion: the concentration of a performer, the movement of water, or the warmth of light falling across a familiar scene.

Svetlana studied at an art school in Malta and has continued to develop her practice through independent study, online courses and experimentation. Her background in floristry and photography informs her attention to colour, composition and natural forms.

Having lived in Malta and spent time in the United Kingdom and the United States, she brings experiences of different places and cultures to her work. In the Algarve, the Atlantic coastline, sculptural cliffs, fishing traditions and changing light provide an ongoing source of inspiration.

She has exhibited in Malta, the United States and Portugal, and has contributed artworks to charitable fundraising initiatives in the UK and USA. Through her Art Voyage project, she also shares her enjoyment of painting with beginners, encouraging people to discover their own creative confidence.

Artist Statement

I paint emotions, the feeling of being absorbed in music, immersed in nature, or sharing a quiet moment with another person. Through my work, I hope to evoke an emotional response in the viewer: joy, tenderness, nostalgia, curiosity, or a sense of wonder.

I call my approach Luminous Colour Impasto Movement.

Alongside my impasto paintings, I experiment with mixed media, combining watercolour, markers and pencils. I enjoy exploring different styles and bringing a playful twist to traditional imagery. Familiar subjects become opportunities for humour, imagination and unexpected combinations of colour and detail. This freedom to experiment keeps my practice curious and alive.

The Algarve’s sea and changing light are recurring inspirations, alongside my love of music and interest in human experience. Whether a painting is atmospheric, expressive or whimsical, I want viewers to find their own connection with it, to pause, look closely, perhaps smile, and discover something that resonates with them.

Luminous Colour Impasto Movement

It brings together light, colour, texture and the movement of the painted mark. Working primarily in oils and acrylics, I use expressive brushwork and palette knives to build surfaces where paint catches the light and becomes part of the experience of looking.
